Schools with a difference
1 Alpette Elementary School, Turin
There’s only one teacher at this school in Italy. In fact, there’s only one student, too. This year eight-year-old Sofia Viola is studying in a class on her own. Her teacher, Isabella Carvelli, teaches her all of the subjects, including Sofia’s favourites: Italian and English. Sofia is alone with Isabella all day, but twice a week she visits another school where she can play with other children.
2 Gulu Village School, Sichuan
This school is in a village at the top of a mountain in China. There aren’t any roads and it takes about five hours to walk to the next town. There’s only one teacher at the school, Shen Qijun, and he also looks after the school building. The children wear uniforms and they are all in the same class. They hardly ever leave the village, but they’re happy.
3 Boat schools, Bangladesh
When it rains in Bangladesh, students can’t go to school because there’s a lot of water in the streets. At this time, they have to use special schools on boats. The boats have got the internet, a computer and some books. They collect the children from their houses and then they take them home again after the classes.
4 Institut Le Rosey, Geneva
Parents have to have a lot of money to send their children to this school in Switzerland. It costs nearly £90,000 to go there. Institut Le Rosey has got 53 classrooms and eight science labs, and students can play golf or go horse-riding in their free time. In the winter the school moves to a ski resort so that students can go skiing.
5 City Montessori School, Lucknow
This school in India has got around 47,000 students. It’s a private school, but it’s very cheap. It costs between £12 and £30 a month to go there. The school has over 1,000 classrooms and about 3,800 people work there. The students study traditional subjects like geography, maths and English, but they also learn about world peace and how different countries can live together without fighting.
