Maddy was worried. “This isn’t going to work” she thought, as she accompanied her elderly parents
through the narrow streets of the small French village.
Her father, who had turned 90 that very day, was excited. He had been looking forward to this
birthday celebration in France for months. When asked about how he wanted to celebrate this
important birthday, he hadn’t hesitated about what he wanted to do. He didn’t want a party or a stay
in a five-star restaurant, he simply wanted to eat his favourite food – seafood (especially crab,
lobster and oysters) in the country that cooked it the best, namely in the north of France.
So, here they were, Maddy and her parents, on their way to a top seafood restaurant. Maddy had
worked hard to organise the break for the three of them. She had also managed to arrange the
surprise arrival of six guests from England, including her daughter. They were due to arrive at 8.30
in the restaurant, driving straight from the ferry when it docked at 8.00.
Maddy’s hands felt wet through with sweat. So many things could go wrong. What if the ferry was
late? What if there were delays on the road? What if ...? She glanced at her watch. It was 8.15. She
had managed to delay setting out for the restaurant until the last minute. This hadn’t been easy as
her father liked his routines and one of these was to eat at 7.00!
They went round a corner and saw the brightly lit windows of the restaurant. It looked very busy.
Her father’s eyes were shining bright. “It looks lovely, Maddy”, and he squeezed her hand.
“A pity they didn’t open earlier” her mother added. “I’m starving and I know your father is too”.
The restaurant was full and buzzing with noise. The people at the table nearest to them were eating
enormous plates of seafood. Maddy’s father looked at them and then grinned at her.
A smartly dressed waiter met them at the door. “Have you made a reservation?” he asked politely in
English. Maddy couldn’t help smiling. Was their nationality so obvious?
“Yes, a table for Davis” she said in perfect French. Then, as the waiter was showing them to their
table, an awful realisation hit her. She’d booked a table for nine people. She saw the waiter smiling,
and pointing to a big, round table, set for nine people. How was she going to explain this to her
father without spoiling the surprise? Then, suddenly, the door opened again.
“Hiya Granddad!” said her daughter.
