What is the ISS? 2. How do people spend their free time there? 3. Why is the space station important? 4. How can people survive in space? 5. What is everyday life like there? 1 The International Space Station A. The International Space Station (ISS) is a man-made structure which orbits the Earth. It was built in 1998 and it is the size of a football pitch. It was built for three reasons: research, plexoratino and education. It travels around the Earth at 27,000 kilometres per hour. It takes just 90 minutes to do a complete orbit! This means that the people on board observe night and day every 45 minutes. B. Six people can live on the ISS at one time. They make up the ISS crew. They include an international niessctist and a group of astronauts, who all live there for about six months. Not only people but also things, including food, are transported often by American and Russian space rockets. The space station gets its power from its huge solar panels. The station has its own water and oxygen (0) systems. C. There is a living space, where the station's crew can eat, sleep and shower. They only need to wear a spacesuit when they go on space walks. There is no gravity in space, which means they float from place to place inside the station. They sleep in sleeping bags which they have to tie down to something so that they don't float around in their sleep! The ISS doesn't have a gedfri, so they can't eat any fresh food. D. There are several laboratories on board. The crew does experiments there. For example, they research deemicin or study the effect of zero gravity on the human body. Sometimes, they observe biology in space or they do experiments to understand better life in space and prepare for future space travel . crew also observes the Earth. For example, they study the weather and climate change.
