Palm Sunday is the holiday that begins Holy Week, most people make palms out of flowers and basil. There are often contests for the prettiest palm tree. During the week people are whirling around cleaning, shopping in preparation for the holidays. The following week on Friday we usually paint Easter eggs in color and on Saturday before Easter there is a candlelight service for the food, which is prepared in boxwood decorated wicker baskets. Usually the baskets contain boiled eggs, sausage, bread, salt and pepper, and a sugar lamb, chocolate egg, sand plantain, horseradish. On Easter Sunday, the day begins with prayer and breakfast with the family. The first thing to be eaten is holy bread. It is shared with everyone who is present at the breakfast. The rest of the dishes are eaten as we wish. The most common dishes on the Easter table are: sour rye soup or white borscht, white sausage, bigos, vegetable salad, boiled eggs with mayonnaise and cakes. Everyone puts different things on the table and there are no specific rules. On this day most Poles go to mass. The second day of Easter is otherwise known as Lazy Monday.
