The Parthenon was commissioned while democracy established in Athens in the 5th century ac. Many of the old buildings in Athens had been burnt down by the Persians and Phidias, a sculptor, given the task of rebuilding them. The Parthenon was built to house the statue of Athena. Phidias insisted on allowing to use only the most expensive and beautiful materials. Ever since ancient times architects, all over the world were influenced by the Parthenon. Over the years a number of exact copies were constructed in different parts of the world. Even the Capitol building in Washington DC was inspired by it. At the moment, the Parthenon is damaged by pollution, but it is expected to be restored to its former glory in the years to come.
