It is 121 kilometres long and is the home to some endangered animals and plants, including the Texas blind salamander and Texas wild rice. Many people like to visit the river and go canoeing, swimming and fishing there. But there is a problem. Some of these people drop litter near the river and into the water. This is very bad for the animals and plants around the river. Sometimes the fish, birds and animals eat the litter and become sick. Poison from the litter goes into the ground and kills some of the plants. But it isn't all bad news. Every year, on the first Sat day of March, there is a big San Marcos River Clean-Up. Tom Goynes and his wife organised the first big clean-up in 1972. Today, hundreds of volunteers help to pick up the litter. Some of them go onto the river in canoes and some of them walk along the river banks. In the 2016 San Marcos River Clean-Up, they took more than seventy car tyres out of the river and collected more than 260 bags of rubbish and 63 bags of recycling. There are also smaller river clean-ups every month. 1 Where is the San Marcos River? 2 What activities can people do on the San Marcos River? 3 How is litter bad for the plants? 4 When was the first big San Marcos River Clean-Up? 74
