Używamy 'the' kiedy rzecz którą opisujemy jest konkretna np. the world, the pen.
Używamy 'a' gdy opisywana rzecz jest jakakolwiek np. można powiedzieć 'Get me a pen.' To znaczy że chcemy jakikolwiek długopis. 'Get me the pen' znaczy że opisujemy specyficzny długopis.
Z 'an' jest tak samo jak 'a', tylko że używamy gdy w następnym wyrazie, pierwsza litera to samogłoska. (po angielsku to a,e,i,o,u).
