In November 2004, Ellen MacArthur became famous all over the world for sailing around the globe on her own, without stopping. It was the fastest time ever recorded for such a journey, and she was aged just twenty-eight
at the time.
Ellen Patricia MacArthur was born in 1976 in Derbyshire, England. She first started sailing when she was four years old. 8.1. ___ At the age of eighteen, she became a qualified instructor. Then, in 1995, she sailed around the whole of Britain by herself, winning the Young Sailor of the Year Award. In 2003, she set up a charity called the Ellen MacArthur Trust. 8.2. ___ The charity helped many people learn to sail.
A year later, in 2004, she set off in her boat from France to try to beat the world record set nine months before
by a young Frenchman. 8.3. ___ On one occasion, she burned one of her arms when she tried to change the generator. 8.4. ___ Fortunately, she solved the problem and she finally reached France after 71 days, 14 hours, 18 minutes and 33 seconds at sea. This was more than one day faster than the previous record. Her record has since been broken, but no one will forget her incredible achievement.
