Shopping list: all purpose flour, dry yeast sugar, butter, eggs.
Mix 3 spoons of dry yeast with 3 spoons of sugar and a cup of water. Add two cups of flour, 2 whole eggs and mix well. Let the dough rise for about 30 minutes. Divide it into 10 parts. Form nice balls, flatten them a bit and brush with melted butter. Sprinkle with sugar. Let it rise again for 30 minutes. Bake in the oven for around 20 minutes at 180 degrees.
Chicken broth
Shopping list: one whole chicken, assorted vegetables (in Polish they are called Italian veggies), garlic, onion.
Clean and rinse the chicken. Rinse, peel and cut into cubes and slices all the vegetables. Use a whole onion and 3 cloves of garlic. Boil all the ingredients in a big pot for about one hour. Add salt, pepper, little bit of chili and a few laurel leaves. Serve with pasta.
Bigos (Polish Hunter's Stew
Shopping list:
- 40 gr dry mushroom
- 200 gr bacon
- 400 gr stew pork (medium chopped)
- 400 gr stew beef (medium chopped)
- 3 spoons of oil
- 1 L of beef broth
- 1 kg of cabbage
- 500 gr of sauerkraut cabbage
- 100 gr dry plums
- 2 onions
- 250 gr high quality sausage
- 1 spoon of tomato paste
- 1 glass of red wine
- Soak dry mushroom for a few hours.
- Chop bacon finely and fry it together with 2 spoons of oil and beef and pork.
- Mix the meat with the broth and simmer it for about 45 minutes.
- Add finely sliced cabbage and simmer the stew for another 30 minutes.
- Add mushroom (together with the water they soaked in), plums, sour kraut (squeeze it well first to get rid of excess water). Add spices and boil for another 30 minutes.
- Chop finely the onions, stir them until become soft, add sliced sausage and fry it on both sides. Move these ingredients to the main pot.
- Add tomato paste and red wine.
- Simmer for another 1 to 2 hours. Stir occasionally to make sure it's not burning in the bottom.
