The architectural and urban complex of old Krakow is one of the most important monuments of cultural heritage in Poland and in the world. The Old Town in Krakow was included in the highest "0" class of monuments in the country. The historic center of Krakow is currently on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The act that contributed to the creation of this historic complex was the location privilege issued for Kraków in 1257. Soon after the privilege was issued, the town was planned to be planned according to the Magdeburg Law. The basis of the new plan was a checkerboard layout in which the streets of the city intersect at right angles to form regular quarters. The central point of Krakow is the Market Square, the size of which has been set at 4 by 4 Krakow cords (approximately 200 x 200 m). Three streets were marked out from each of the market frontages, except for the eastern one, where the St. Mary's Church already existed, which slightly disturbed the regularity of the layout. Behind the church there was an auxiliary market, today called Mały. Other irregularities resulted from the necessity to connect the previously existing castles and church settlements - e.g. Grodzka Street, departing from the Market Square at an irregular angle, led straight to the Okół settlement and further to the Wawel Hill, and Bracka Street was curved towards the Franciscan Church.
