Born in Bolivia in 1930, Escalante arrived as an immigrant to the United States. For years, he did menial jobs such as cooking burgers while he was attending evening classes to pursue his dream of being a teacher. Astonishingly, the man who would become the most famous teacher in America first walked into a classroom at the age of 43. When Escalante began his career at Garfield High School in one of the tougher neighbourhoods of Los Angeles, he discovered that the textbooks in his class were ridiculously simple. The Bolivian decided to run extra maths lessons with much more demanding work for the brighter students. His aim was for them to take the national Advanced Placement (AP) exams, a formidable challenge but one that helps students go on to study at university. The ambitious teacher had no fear that it was beyond his students' abilities. As a poster in his classroom said, 'Calculus Need Not Be Made Easy - It Is Easy Already.' To Escalante's delight, his students triumphed. When the results arrived one year, he found that everyone had passed, with seven getting the highest possible grades. Then, suddenly, disaster struck. The people marking the exam claimed that some of the students had produced very similar answers. They were accused of cheating and disqualified. Escalante could not believe it. His students, who were mostly from Latin American backgrounds, suspected racial prejudices at play and protested that non-Latin students would not have received the same treatment. Nevertheless, the only option was to retake the exam. Twelve students took the challenge and proved their teacher right! Thankfully, every one of them passed. Due to the public outcry, the case caught the eye of the national news and Escalante suddenly became famous. Later on, the story was turned into a 1988 film called Stand and Deliver. Most importantly, however, the media coverage meant that his courses became incredibly popular and he could reach more students as a result. At one point, more maths students from Garfield High School were attending the University of Southern California than students from all other Los Angeles schools combined. The ambitious immigrant from Bolivia had not just changed the perception of his community, but also the lives of dozens of people who had come through his classroom door.
