Summerhill School in Suffolk, England is a small
boarding school with about 75 students, aged from
5 to 17, and about 16 teachers. In some ways, it is just
like all the other schools: there are lessons, exams
and lots of school rules. But in other ways, it is a very
unusual school. Students don't have to go to any
lessons. They can choose the subjects they like, but
if they don't want to go to class, there are other
activities for them, like sport, listening to music
or just chatting with their friends. They don't have
to take any exams or do any homework if they don't
want to. They don't get reports and there are no
detentions.
There are school meetings twice a week. At these
meetings, everybody - students and teachers
together - can make new school rules or change old
rules. There are a few rules, however, which students
can't change: for example, they're not allowed to
sleep during the day or watch television.
The school term is also much shorter than at most
other schools. In fact, at Summerhill School, there are
18 weeks of school holiday every year. Children come
from countries all around the world to learn at
Summerhill School. 'Summerhill is more of a family
than a school - full of friendship, laughter and real
feelings', says the head teacher.
